Seeking - Dæmon Fic

I like a good dæmon fic (i.e. an AU fic in which all the characters have dæmons as in Philip Pullman's fantasy series His Dark Materials), but I haven't encountered any in Pros fandom. Anyone know of any?

I don't remember coming across anything like that - I guess it would have to be written after His Dark Materials to fit that genre? It's quite specific!

There's lots of more general demon/supernatural fic in Pros though!

Fic with demons is quite different from dæmon fic. The latter is a little genre of fusions. There are a handful of examples in Man from U.N.C.L.E. fandom (at least eight, the number that are clearly labeled on AO3), and I have also read them based on Sherlock Holmes, the Lord of the Rings, and The Sentinel.

Lol - yeah, I know. That's why I noted that it would have to be pretty recent fic!

Is it just His Dark Materials it's "fused" with, or does it incorporate other stories etc. that might use similar types?

Well, Northern Lights/The Golden Compass came out 25 years ago, but I suppose that's sort of recent, relative to classic fandoms.

The fics of this type that I've seen have all been explicit fusions with His Dark Materials. I've never run into anything along these lines that used related ideas from other sources. Certainly such things could exist, though.

Wow - 25 years?! Longer ago than I thought, but now you say that I did read Northern Lights just before I first went to Alaska, so...yeah!

Long enough that someone might have then, and maybe they have, but I don't remember seeing anything like that... Although if it was gen as well, I'm less likely to have seen it.

I think there have been fewer "magical" type cross-overs between then and now, compared with Pros fandom before that, but that might just be the way I've seen it too. So you never know, maybe someone's written it, and someone will know!

Gosh what an interesting concept! I'm not sure I could write that! HDM is so good but it's a wonder nobody's done it for Pros. If you find one, let me know because I want to give it a go. I do love the idea but not in that realm but rather using the daemons, not HDM characters. Although Scorsbey would make a heck of a CI5 agent! And Ann Holly certainly fits Mrs Coulter. Ha!

I haven't read His Dark Materials; so LOL, I have no idea what you have in mind.

But *anything* can be made into a crossover, says I; so Im sure it could be done...

I think one or two of the dæmon fics I have read took place in a world similar to Pullman's--witches and natural theology and such--but the rest were set either in our world, only with dæmons, or in Middle Earth, only with dæmons.

I'm sure I read one, though as usual I don't remember title or author. Ray has a cat and Bodie can't figure out whether it's a daemon or just a cat. It refuses to speak, but it might just be a bit perverse that way. Cats, you know. I tried searching Pullman or HDM or daemon on AO3, but nothing for Pros or B/D. Maybe I should search cat, but much as I enjoy Castor and Pollux, I don't want to wade through all of those right now.

Jumping in very belatedly because I came back to remind myself of your daemon fic wishes, that I like Ann Holly! I think she's a decent woman that Doyle treats fairly badly! Why do women always get the blame for men misleading them?!

I've just nipped back for another reason and seen this - actually that cat premise sounds familiar to me too, and I don't read MFU, so you must have been right the first time about the Pros version! Maybe it was written by someone who's a fan of both!

I think I've said in some other thread you were part of that I find her very blank. I get almost no reading at all on her personality. So I don't strongly dislike her, but I don't like her, either.

I do not wholly disagree with you, though, one of the songs I've been considering for my next vid has the line "Love is a lie, which means I've been lied to. Love is a lie, which means I've been lying, too. Love is a lie which means I've been lied to." I envision using clips of Cathy Mason and the character played by Lala Ward (whose name escapes me) to match the first and last sentences. Ann Holly would cover the middle one.

Yes, that makes sense from Doyle's pov... There's quite a choice for the first and last lines too, he really does seem to try and trust women too easily - or he picks the wrong ones to trust! There's Shelley Hunter from Hiding to Nothing too... Although I suppose you could always use Esther for the middle line too, though I tend to assume she knew what she was getting into, and was then just tempted to take it further herself...
