So I saw on Fanlore about a series called "Mr. Doyle's Neighborhood Universe," by Kate Nuernberg. It doesn't appear to be online or anywhere except zines... but I've been obsessing about this!

on palely loitering on fanlore

Can someone please tell me more??

See, I have this intense image of an AU where Doyle and Bodie live next door like the people on "Good Neighbours" and one of them (Bodie) is rather proper and a bit posh and the other (Doyle) is doing things like hunting rabbits on golf courses and harvesting horrible herbal weeds, but they're still friends and have fun together.

I was a kid when my parents watched this show (Good Neighbours) on TV so I don't remember absolutely everything about it, but the general feeling of it being rather fun, I do. And, uh, I really really want to either read or write that story. >.>

So please satisfy my curiousity if you've read it? Please? Is it like that?

It's a while since I read it, and I recall liking the idea a lot more than I liked the outcome, if that makes sense! Don't know whether you prefer slash or het, but it's a gen series which almost reads to me like pre-slash - I remember wishing they'd cut out the circling around each other and get together!

From what I remember, Doyle has been injured and ends up moving out to suburbia - and the Good Life characters live next door. But he never really does the Good Life lifestyle - that's left to Tim, Margo and the others.

Go and write it! :-)

I don't know the Universe - and I'm not thrilled to read 'Universes' at all!
But I would love to read such a story from you, with good minor characters. :-)

LOL, my first thought was Pros + Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, and there have been some really good Mr. Rogers spoofs over time (and I think Fred Rogers was very much on board with a number of them)...

But no. Though there could be *much* crack there. :D

At first I imagined Bodie and Doyle were the 'self-sufficient' couple, with stuffy neighbours - 'cos of course, they must be a couple.

But yes, Bodie as posh, proper neighbour and Doyle as alternative life-styler, and the sparks as they get together and have to adapt and compromise, would be fab! (a bit like Larton?)

go write it, now!

One Saturday Night Live spoof was "Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Rogers," so maybe... "4.5 and Mr. Rogers."

He comes in from an obbo, puts on his jumper/sweater, and explains the world - of CI5.

Some series get high numbers of Nielsen watchers; this gets high numbers of D-notices.

Actually, explaining several episodes in Mr. Rogers-speak could be amusing... "Good morning, boys and girls! Shall I tell you about the very bad man who wanted to poison our water supply? Can you say, 'poison'?" :D

Okay, this has gone on long enough. I *have* to get a copy of Larton. Pronto! :D

Hah. Are you a zine-reader generally? I warn you, I bought a zine or two about this time last year, and oh god, they are taking over my life now.

I started with Paper Flowers (same publisher, very different style, hooked me into zine-reading before I had finished the first couple of paragraphs - seriously, I got three paragraphs in, thought "Holy fuck", and the plans for the day went straight out of the window). Larton came not long after...

...and I don't like to admit how much came after that.

LOL! It may be too late for me. :D

But I read a description of _Paper Flowers_ - that sounds *riiiiight* up my alley.
