But you are such a helpful lot......I love everyone's userpics, and would like to knock some up- 'proper' ones, rather than just screencaps ;-) Could someone a bit more experienced let me know how they get the sizing right please? A dunce at these type of things...:-( xxx

Not sure about other editing software, but in Photoshop I just set the cropping dimensions to 100 x 100 (ie userpic size)

Your mileage may vary (old fandom saying) on the amount of processing that you like. To me there's something very lovely about slightly grainy screencaps, framed well. But there are others that are airbrushed to death (IMO) that others love.

I'm like londonronnie - I'm using a very old version of Photoshop, and just start with a 100 x 100 (userpic size) base. Drag a screencap or whatever into it, and either crop or reduce the size, holding the shift key to keep proportions right... only trouble is, it gets addictive! *g*

For a free online editor that lets you set the size, I use fotoflexer.com

If you want to really have fun you can try sumopaint.com

Both are free. Sumo is more involved yet fun.

I'd actually recommend resizing to 99 x 99 -- there used to be a glitch where LJ would add another pixel on uploading and if your image is 100 x 100 originally it will bounce. Not sure if the glitch is still there because I've been using 99 x 99 so long it's automatic now.

Tip - resizing should be the very last thing you do. If you want to add text or brushes, do it in your larger working image.
