Doyle has left CI5 [I can't remember why] and is living in Italy [or maybe Greece?] as an artist. Bodie tracks him down and finds him painting [or photographing?]some beautiful models at his home. Bodie convinces Doyle to go back to London with him [to help with a case?] Sorry - I know I'm not being very helpful here!☹ does any of this sound at all familiar to anyone?

I have a vague idea that it has something to do with 'Ladder of Swords'. Doyle is believed killed in an explosion in a Bank and Bodie stays in CI5 but is not happy, so goes off on a trip around either Italy or Greece (I'm thing Greece) where he meets Don de Marco.

Would that be it?

Of course I have no idea of the Title nor the Author, as usual, but maybe someone can name it for us. Great story which I would like to read again.
