I always forget the title and author of this story - Doyle vanishes on Bodie because he's ill, I think, and ends up in a relative's cottage in tiny village somewhere, with all his painting gear. Bodie tracks him down of course, and they go out to the pub and have way too much, and come back gorgeously drunk along a path - I think by a river - and one of them bumps into a tree and wonders why they didn't notice it in the middle of the path on the way to the pub... or something similar, but the way it's written always makes me giggle...

Any ideas anyone?! Help!

Oh, I don't remember that bit, but maybe... my memories sort of stop at the tree... or - no - I have a vague idea that Bodie convinced Doyle to come back to London with him... or that Bodie would move into the cottage with him, or... Oh, I don't know!

Wish I wasn't at work so that I could browse properly for it... I'm sure it's online...

And I've just re-read it over lunchtime and realised that I must have been crossing it with the story mentioned below, because Doyle doesn't go to the cottage because he's ill at all, it's a completely different thing... *g*

Ah - yep. The illness bit threw me a little, because I knew he wasn't ill in Alexandra's, but there do seem to be quite a few 'Doyle skips off to a cottage/hotel/desert island' stories about where Bodie has to go off to find him, and the tree in the path thing was what I remembered from your description.

I don't have the CDs so I'm not familiar with the stories Rosie mentions below, but I do like a bit of the old h/c so I might have to go seek some others out now. *g*

There's another story - where Doyle develops some obscure but serious illness - a blood condition involving radiotherapy - and goes off to a cottage in Cornwall without telling Bodie where he is, though he has told Cowley who gets the CI5 medics to confirm his condition. Doyle won't let Cowley tell Bodie why he has gone.
Eventually Doyle is unable to resist ringing Bodie to hear his voice and Bodie tracks him down. And there is a sequel, too, where Bodie has an accident and Doyle comes back to London to be at his bedside. I don't suppose anyone remembers which ones these are? I thought I had saved these but can't find 'em now!

Found it now - someone else had asked about it earlier on Pros storyfinders. It is Bittersweet 1 and 2, by SN and they are on the Proslib cd.
So that's me happy!
And yes - a poorly lads ficlist would be good, wouldn't it, for all of us h/c fans. Though with their injury records, it might be a long list!

Oh well done you, and I remember those titles now as well! No ProsLib CD here at work, so it'll have to wait until hometime... One advantage to working is that I have lunchtimes and 2 x bus journeys to read fic - whee! *g*
