Desperately Seeking Jane

O.K.  Deep breath. Both feet. Jump!
       Does anyone have a COMPLETE list of ALL of Jane's Professionals Fiction? And some idea of where to find them? I'm looking for both stories and zines:  Falconhurst, Czardas, Magickal vol.2 and vol. 3 (I've also heard vol. 3 called Power and Magic), a COMPLETE copy of The Hunting Book 1 (Circuit Archive version sadly incomplete), Rainy Days vol.1 (which I think is out of print?), a story called "Flare Up"  which I think was collected in something called "Outtakes" from Full Circle 1-5, Perfect Gentlemen, Flesh and Steel Omnibus (good grief!), a story called "A Beltane Elegy" (Cross My Heart 5?), a novella "Cover Up" (Cross My Heart 12?) and a series of stories which I think were printed in Other Times, Other Places 1-6-"The Snowbird", "The Swordsman", "Bounty", "Strangers on the Shore", "Prince of the Mists", and "Breakheart" (which I think is on Circuit Archive).  I've heard that she also had two stories in a zine called Adult Situations, "Family Affairs" and "Night."  Also, are there stories in the "Old Longings" series? The only two posted on the Circuit Archive are "Old Longings" and "Acceptable Risks." And does a collected zine version of The Dreaming Stone series even exist? Am I missing any? It's like looking for Shakespeare's lost folios!

     Any help at all, even just a complete list to start from, would be gratefully appreciated. :)

You posted a similar request to the SlashSwap list, yes? If so, then you should get an email with more detailed info on used zine sources later today - I hope. If that wasn't you, drop me an email at my LJ name at aol dot com and I'll send it to you.

But in the meantime, there's a few things that should help get you started. First, do you have the Proslib CD? If not, get it immediately!! Not only is the Proslib CD a thing of beauty in its own right (thousands of stories, background info, pics, fan art, vids - it's the best fandom primer available anywhere, bar none), it has 40+ stories by Jane. Most, if not all at this point, should be in the Circuit Archive but there are many stories on the Proslib CD that are not in either of the two online archives (Hatstand and Circuit) and some that will likely not ever be online due to author requests.

Second, the best collection of readily available story lists can be found through the Hatstand Archive and Proslib. Because of issues regarding privacy and the fact that many early Pros writers didn't use pseudonyms, KEEP IN MIND that the online versions of the category story lists (e.g. AU, Older Lads, Series, etc.) does NOT always include full author name info. The story list versions that are found in the Proslib mailing list archive and on the Prolib CD both DO HAVE the full info - which is another reason to both subscribe to the Proslib list and get the Proslib CD.

The Hatstand Archive has an online version of the Pros Slash Zine masterlist, which pulls together the separate lists of Pros slash Anthologies, Letterzines, Multi-Fandom Zines, and Novels in the files area of the Proslib mailing list (and Proslib CD). These lists, or the compiled zine masterlist, are your BEST source for tracking down stories by Jane. The Hatstand slash zine masterlist also includes reviews.

Between the Hatstand Archive and Palely Loitering, you'll find an incredible collection of info on Pros zines which not only makes it easier to track down specific authors or stories or zines, it helps prioritize searches!

Finding stories and zines by Jane has become more difficult, though not impossible by any means, since Jane officially left fandom about a year and a half ago, and closed her zine press, Nut Hatch, in which the majority of her stories were published. You can still find the Nut Hatch zines used. Nut Hutch press had kept their zines in print for a very long time, sometimes decades, so there were more authorized zines printed than from many other presses with limited print runs.

A bunch of Jane's stories were also available on the Circuit with permission; many Circuit stories were later printed in Nut Hatch zines, some edited and revised, some printed as they appeared on the Circuit. You can find a TON of Circuit stories around fandom and at cons. Nearly every con with any Pros presence will have a box (or two or three *G*) of Circuit stories available for free or for sale (though really, prices should NEVER be more than what the actual copy costs were or it defeats the purpose of the original Circuit). And some fen will pass on their Circuit stories after they've read them or when they acquire zines.
