Mel Keegan

I've only just found out that one of the printed m/m books I have had for years started out life as a Pros story - Ice, Wind and Fire by Mel Keegan.  One of the others that I have, also by Mel, is Storm Tide and I wondered if that was originally a Pros story as well (the characterisations lead me to believe that it was).  If it was, does anyone know what it was called (unless, of course, it had the same title but I can't find it if it was).  I also have a lot of Mel's books in e-format and I guess some of these would have been Pros as well - I think Windrage was.

I would love to read these as Pros stories.  Were they only printed in zines or were they available electronically?

Thanks in advance.

Storm Tide is a revision of an earlier Pros zine by Madelaine Ingram titled Flood Tide. It was published as a Pros zine by Nut Hatch, a press that Jane ran for a majority of its existence. Flood Tide was only available in zine format, never on the paper Circuit or the Proslib CD or online.

There is ongoing debate about how many of the authors published by Nut Hatch Press were really separate people and how many were Jane's pseudonyms. Jane, herself, on numerous occasions said that Jane, Kathy Keegan & Madelaine Ingram were separate people. Others have disputed that, but I've never actually seen proof or statements from people who knew Jane in person to settle the issue.

Many of Jane's stories were freely available on the Circuit, or after being zine published were released to the Circuit or later put online at the archives. However, the Pros novels and novellas that were later revised, had the "serial numbers filed off" and were published as Mel Keegan's "original" m/m stories were, by and large, previously only available in zine format.

I put together a bit of a list of Mel Keegan novels that started life as Pros stories not so long ago.

I know I posted it to one of the comms, I'll have to see if I can track it down!

It was in a comment posted in response to [livejournal.com profile] taverymate's DiaLJ post which she links to in her comment below.

I have contacted you about the Flood Tide zine

Oh, when was that? Recently?

Sorry, I sometimes tend to have a memory like a sieve. Have you been waiting for a response from me? If so, many apologies - would you like to get in touch again?

Until [livejournal.com profile] byslantedlight's reply to your comment on the [livejournal.com profile] discoveredinalj post triggered a LJ notification email to me, I never knew you had commented.

I really appreciate comments and try to always reply, so I'm very sorry I was never notified that you had commented. I'm off to rectify that delay now.

Thanks!

Your reply to [livejournal.com profile] londonronnie's comment on my [livejournal.com profile] discoveredinalj post triggered a LJ notification email to me. And that was the FIRST time I was notified that [livejournal.com profile] londonronnie had commented on that post!

The LJ notification had me puzzled at first - I thought it was a reply to my comment here and I came looking for both your reply and [livejournal.com profile] londonronnie's comment. Of course, then I couldn't find them. *g*

Finally, it dawned on me to check the actual URL - in my defense, it was late and I was lacking in caffeine *G* - and I figured out what had happened. Now I need to go reply to several comments that I never knew existed on that post.

So thanks. Without you, those comments would have languished without replies for who know how much longer.

How funny that you discovered Pros the other-way-around from Jane's filed-off-serial-number stories!

There's a bit written about the connection here (http://www.palelyloitering.com/Authors/KathyKeegan.html), and there's a list of Jane's stories here (http://www.palelyloitering.com/Authors/Jane.html) - you'll recognise some of the titles!

Windrage is Nothing Left to Lose (http://www.thecircuitarchive.com/tca/archive/4/nothingleft.html) (There's some chat about it over here (http://ci5hq.livejournal.com/1712.html#comments) including rumours of a sequel which I don't think we ever heard more about...)

There's been various chat over the years about the different stories, but I can't remember them all now... I know I found The Swordsman (http://www.palelyloitering.com/zines/othertimesandplacesiv.html) to be almost identical with a story that was up on Mel Keegan's site (from the excerpt), and I could have sworn I posted about that somewhere, but can't findn it...

It'd be quite useful to have a list of all these, actually - hopefully someone with a better memory than me will jump in!

Jane & Kathy Keegan's Pros Stories

Several years ago I compiled a (nearly) complete listing of all Jane and Kathy Keegan's Pros stories & where they were originally published. I updated the list this past Dec as part of the Discovered in a LJ winter challenge.

Here's the list:
http://discoveredinalj.livejournal.com/229430.html

Off the top of my head, I know that the following Pros stories were later revised & published as original m/m fiction by Mel Keegan. Some only had the character names changed and others were substantially revised. Most had the same title as the Pros stories/zines, but some had new titles.

FANTAZINE 5 (1993, Nut Hatch Collective; oop)
Aquamarine by Jane - Same title

OTHER TIMES AND PLACES VI (1995, OTP Press; available from Kathleen Resch & Waveney Zine Shop)
Breakheart by Jane - Same title

FANTAZINE 4 (1992, Nut Hatch Collective; oop)
An East Wind Blowing by Jane - Same title

CROSS MY HEART 1 (1987, Nut Hatch Collective; oop)
Ice, Wind and Fire by Kathy Keegan - Same title

A MADRIGAL by Jane (1987, Nut Hatch Collective; oop) - This was published under the new title Fortunes of War by Mel Keegan

THE PERFECT GENTLEMEN by Jane (1991, Nut Hatch Collective; oop) - This was published under the new title Dangerous Moonlight by Mel Keegan

THE SWORDSMAN by Jane (1993, Nut Hatch Collective; oop) - Same title

UNFINISHED MELODY by Jane (1988, Nut Hatch Collective; oop) - The was published under the new title Nocturne by Mel Keegan

There are more, but I'd have to check files to get the info and don't have the time now.

Hope that gets you started.

You're welcome. I pulled together some more info and asked other Pros fen to help compile a more complete list. That post is over at [livejournal.com profile] ci5hq: http://ci5hq.livejournal.com/200526.html

I understand well the allure of new projects when you're in the middle of a challengling project - see my comment on the new post. *G*

Best of luck with your Big Bang story. It's always a pleasure to see longer stories posted. I will read and love stories fo all lenghs - from true drabbles to epic novel series - but I have a special fondness for novel-length stories.
