Yes, very helpful. I thought I remembered something but with this old brain, it's a wonder I can get home some days! I'm sure there have been more since then. I like amnesia stories.
Now, being a Psych grad, I'm wondering whether they are all retrograde amnesia, or whether anyone has written about anterograde amnesia (ie loss of the ability to create new memories by STM encoding into LTM - short-term memory in psychology is basically the ability to repeat a phone number straight after you've heard it etc, rather than recall. Many disorders as well as brain damage can cause problems in the creation of new memories rather than the recall of what's already there, including chronic pain, depression, stroke...)
At it's most extreme, our case studies included a man who, when his wife was visiting him in hospital and stepped out to get herself a coffee from the vending machine, greeted her again, completely unaware that he had seen her at all since the accident which led to his brain leision. As his children grew up, because he could only remember tham as they had been at the time of his accident, he could not recognise them. As he aged, he also could not recognise his own face in the mirror. The accident was, forever, the last thing he could remember.
Everyone else has beaten me to the bad puns, alas.
If someone does make a list, isn't there also a JGL one about a Doyle returning after an accident, seemingly having forgotten that he and Bodie were lovers? Aha, The Palest Ink, I think?
And 'For a Start', by Irish. In Dark Fantasies 4. Doyle realises Bodie fancies him, and reacts badly. Bodie is knocked out and loses a day's memory. Doyle takes the opportunity to reconsider his reaction to Bodie. Only, of course, sooner or later, Bodie will regain his memory...
